Kane opened the door and glanced in both directions. The house was quiet. Outside, living things still screamed in pain, undead things screamed in anger and rubber toys bounced bizarrely along, tearing the throats and ankles out of their neighbors. Kane tiptoed down the stairs, careful to keep his eyes on the kitchen doorway. Straight ahead. Don’t look for daddy.

“Don’t look. Don’t look. Don’t look.” Kane whispered to himself all the way down the stairs. He reached the bottom. Took a big breath and darted across the tile floor to the door. He stopped again and looked outside. The yard still looked empty. Sounds of pain came from the front of the house, but the backyard was quiet and filled with shadows. If he stayed quiet, if he stayed hidden, just like before, he would make it.

The dead things had plenty of occupy them at the moment. He heard a loud shout, recognizing their elderly neighbor’s voice from over the fence. Mr. Stevens shouted again, and Kane heard a thud, then another one, and a third. Curiosity swept over him. His brain pulled him back. The thuds came again, and Mr. Stevens shouted louder, then cursed. Kane couldn’t stop himself. What was making that sound?

His brain shouted at him to stop. ‘DON’T LOOK’ flashed his head, in all capital letters, like a warning from his momma, but he had to see. He started toward the fence, darting on tiptoe through the shadows. More thuds, one right after the other, several at once, pounding across the driveway like basketballs. Mr. Stevens was yelping now and whimpering. Thud! Thud! Thud! Thudthudthudthudthud, so many crammed together. Kane snuck up to the fence. Eyes wide. Heart racing in his chest. His bag of ducks clutched tight in one hand.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. More whimpers from Mr. Stevens. Kane put his face against the crack in the fence. Then bit his tongue, backpedaling in horror, as the thudding continued. He almost fell on his butt, but stayed upright. He stopped, panting hard. Was that real? Was it? He scrunched his face up again. He didn’t want to, but something was pulling him, calling for him to look again.

Kane moved closer, barely breathing, put his eye to the crack again and steeled himself to watch. Big red rubber balls were launching themselves off Mr. Stevens’ house and garage, pummeling him where he lay on the ground. Giant rubber balls dripping with crimson, slamming into the old man as he cowered helplessly on the ground, trying to hide his head. These were not just big, but extra big, like they had grown somehow. Kane had never seen a dodgeball that big. He could only stare as the balls launched their attack.

Ball after ball slammed into the man. Kane heard bones snapping, the squelch of wet flesh, and saw sprays of blood. He heard the old man whimpering as he begged for it to stop. Kane was horrified and fascinated at the same time. Death by dodgeball didn’t seem like a good way for anyone to die.
